To read: Luke 13:31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

To think about:

How many of us fully accept God's plan for us? How many of us eagerly and willingly accept God's will?

My 84-year-old mother often reminds me, when I question things that happen to those I care about or when things don't go "my way," to remember who ultimately is in charge. "It's God's will" is an expression I've heard her say countless times. Her strong faith was developed through a life as the granddaughter, daughter, wife, and now mother of farmers. Living through what some would think very difficult times in terms of finances, dealing with the weather, uncertainties of crops, and family illness has seemed to make her love of God stronger and her faith deeper. As in today's passage from Luke, her knowledge of God's plan, while not always easy to accept, continues to guide her. My mother's example is still visible as she tends to her garden not knowing if this will be a good harvest, as she helps prepare meals at church following funeral services to give comfort to those who grieve, as she watches her circle of friends struggle with growing older and dealing with life decisions that are difficult. Knowing that God is always there to care for her as the "hen cares for her brood under her wings" is the message that helps her accept God's plan and to do God's will.

Why should we question what God has in mind for us when we know that his presence is always with us, his love for us grows stronger and stronger, and his promise of life eternal is such a wonderful gift!

To pray:

Heavenly Father, keep us ever mindful of your love for each of us as we work to understand our part in your plan. Give us guidance to do your will, knowing that you are with us each and every moment of our lives. Amen.
