Adult Formation

Adult Forum: Exploring the Spiritual Life

Class Website: Adult Forum Website (external link; restricted access)

The group meets from 10:00 - 10:45 AM on Sundays in the Library. Canon John Huntington leads the discussion and provides study materials. The class uses three small books for background reading, all by spiritual masters of the last century: Evelyn Underhill ("The Spiritual Life" - preview at Google Books), Johannes Metz ("Poverty of Spirit" - preview at Google Books), and Abraham Heschel ("I Asked for Wonder"). Discussions will follow the interests of group members, and should lead us into very interesting places! We will enter into lively conversation with Scripture and Christian saints and mystics on topics of particular interest to the group members. Come, join us! For more information, please contact Canon John Huntington - johnhdr@comcast.net.

Adult Forum: An Altar in the World, A Geography of Faith

Another Adult Forum Class!!! A second Adult Forum class meets at 10:00 AM on Sundays in the choir room. Molly Nussear leads the group through the book entitled: An Altar in the World, A Geography of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor. The book explores ways to see God and increase our awareness of his presence, outside the four walls of the church building. All are welcome!

EfM @ St. James'

Education for Ministry (EfM) is an opportunity to share our faith, along with fun, food, and fellowship. EfM seminars deepen our faith and our understanding of our Christian heritage, provide us with new confidence to be Christ's ministers, teach us how to think theologically, and provide us with a small group of supporters throughout the process. Seminars, facilitated by trained mentors, are being held during the school year on Sunday evenings from 5 to 7:30 pm downstairs in the Education Building. Participants commit one year at a time to study the Bible, church history, and twentieth century theology. EfM is a distance-learning program of the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Completion of the entire EfM program takes four years, and there is a cost for each year. Continuing education credits are also available. Participants do not need to be from St. James' or even Episcopalians. For more information, please contact Linda Stewart - lstewart1563@gmail.com or Marjie Mack - mmack3108@comcast.net.

Goodness Gracious Bible Study

Goodness gracious me! So - the Bible is actually full of surprise! It's not only relevant and even humorous, but a practical guide for equipping us to face our hectic and often confusing everyday lives and relationships. This year, Nan and Dean Lewis will lead 3 application-oriented studies based on biblical principles for living. The studies include some teaching and lots of group participation and discussion - all aimed at finding what solutions God offers us through His character, His relationship with His creation and (most of all!) His relationship with US!

Course: Too Busy Not To Pray, beginning September 14th, 2009 (for women)

Course: Never Beyond Hope, beginning January 12, 2010 (co-ed)

Course: Becoming a Woman of Prayer, beginning April 12, 2010 (for women)

For additional information or to register, please contact Nan Lewis - nanwlewis@gmail.com.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study

Our Wednesday Morning Bible Study follows the Holy Eucharist and Healing service at 10am. The bible study is lectionary based. We study the scriptures for the following Sunday's readings, thus giving us a better background of the history, culture, and various interpretations of the readings. This bible study helps prepare our hearts and minds for Sunday morning worship. The study lasts approximately an hour and is open to everyone. If you would like more information please contact Rev. Amanda Knouse.
