Memberships: Teams participating in MASSA league events should check to see if they have completed the process for joining the InterScholastic Sailing Association yet. The list of member teams is posted on the ISSA website (click here to see the list)
Schedule:
*The District single-handed qualifer to determine who will represent MASSA at the Cressy Singlehanded National Championships is scheduled for two days, but it will be completed in one day if sufficient races (3 per class) are completed to allow selection of qualifiers. Bring your own full or radial rig laser and register your school as an ISSA member.
The top 3 full rig and 3 radial rig sailors will qualify to attend the Cressy National Championship on October 18-19, 2008 at Cornell in Ithaca, New York. Check-in at SSA will be from 8:00 to 8:30. Mandatory skipper's meeting at 9:00 with racing to follow. You must bring your own laser and may enter either the radial class or the full rig class but you must make that selection when you pre-register. There is no limit on the number of entries per school. You must be a member of MASSA and must be in the 9th grade, or above, of high school. Please fill out the membership information on the ISSA web site and (1) send the dues to MASSA in sufficient time for them to have been received before the regatta or (2) pay the school dues at the regatta prior to the skippers meeting. If the school was planning to pay the dues but they weren't received by MASSA prior to this regatta, (possibly because a school hasn't had time to issue a check), a competitor may still participate in the regatta by paying them directly to the district representative at the regatta and, if dues directly from the school are eventually received by MASSA, we will refund the original payment to the individual. But be sure that the ISSA website database has the school 2008-9 registration information entered into it.
Pre-register for the regatta by notifying Bill Schneider by Saturday, Sept 20th at the latest, preferably sooner. For more information and pre-registration, please contact Bill Schneider by email (click here)or phone (410-757-4729). If you email your signup request, be sure you get an acknowledgment back to be sure that your email was received. Click here for the NOR (sailing instructions).
**The District Fleet Racing regatta is scheduled for Saturday, Nov 1 with Sunday reserved for racing if enough races can't be held on Saturday to complete an official regatta.
The number of teams that each league can send to fleet and team racing district regattas are calculated based on each leagues's proportion of the total district membership as described in the MASSA rules. Each league will notify the MASSA director, and the league director of the league in which the regatta is to be held, of which teams will be attending by the Monday before each district regatta. If a league doesn't fill its quota, or teams have to cancel after the Monday deadline, the extra boats will be allocated to the district in which the regatta is held, since they are more likely to be able to attend at the last minute.

Severn won the Mallory National Fleet Racing High School Sailing Championship. Severn School sails from their own facility. Broadneck (sailing from Severn Sailing Association) was 5th and Annapolis High (sailing from Annapolis Yacht Club) was 14th out of the 20 high schools who qualified from nationwide high school sailing districts. This is the first time an Annapolis area high school has won the national high school doublehanded championship since 1982, when Annapolis High School won. Broadneck's 5th place is their best since their 8th place finish in 1991.
Severn was in third place prior to the last two races but finished well in them and also won a protest against Newport Harbor that moved them into first place. The sailing in the Severn off the Naval Academy featured chilly weather but great consistent winds for sailing with lighter windspeed at times on Saturday, but in a consistant direction down the river, building to challenging winds with waves later on Sunday which held a consistant direction up the river from the bay. A full round of 20 races were completed ahead of schedule by the very talented sailors representing some of the best high school sailors in the United States. On the water umpiring by judges Andrew Cole of Annapolis and Stovy Brown of Solomons Island contributed to efficiently completing the races and the Navy sailing program, under the direction of John Vandemoer, Navy Head Sailing Coach, organized and ran the excellent race series with no problems.
As a trial, all the boats had a GPS locator system that was used to produce an aerial display of each race which will be posted on the www.kattack.com website or click here to go to the webpage where the program is posted.
