2006 FALL SEASON

The full results from the fall season are posted here [fall results, click here].

The MASSA FALL FLEET RACING CHAMPIONSHIP regatta was held at NY Maritime College on Saturday, 9/30/06. We thank Coach Danny Pletsch for making the arrangements and his staff of sailors who worked deligently to provide us with a well-organized regatta. In addition to the RC vessel, three safety boats were provided. The winds conditions started light from the north and then switch around to moderate SW winds after a short postponement. The regatta started during slack tide with increasing flood current as the day went on. Five windward/leeward races were run for each division with most of them being twice around a course that was lenghtened as the day went on. The large number of OSCs occurred on division B's third race on the third attempt to run it after two general recalls. The X flag was flown and signal made to the early boats but only one returned to clear. Appreciation is also greatfully rendered to Maritime All-American sail team alumnus Dick Sadler who chaired the protest committee hearings at the end of the regatta.
Congratulations are in order for the Fall Season Championship Winners: 1st Gunston, MD; 2nd Norfolk Collegiate, VA; and 3rd St. Augustine, NJ.

The MASSA Single-handed qualifying regatta to see who represented us in the Cressy National Championships was held September 17th, 2006, at the Rochester Yacht Club. The sailors who qualifed to represent us at the National Cressy Single Handed Championships in Greenwich, Connecticut, the weekend of October 28th are: Full Rig: 1st - Randy Hartranft, Lakewood Prep, N.J.; and 2nd - Cole Allsopp, Key School, MD.; and, if either of the first two sailors can not attend, the 3rd place sailor, Jerry Tullo-St. Ann's School, N.Y will be the substitute for them. Radial Rig: 1st - Joe Morris, Severn School, MD; and 2nd - Sam Ingham, Brighton High, N.Y.; and, if either of the first two sailors can not attend, the 3rd place sailor, Scott Furnary, Rye County Day School, N.Y. will be the substitute.

2007 Cressy National Championship, October 28 & 29 at Indian Harbor, Massachusetts. Special congratulations to Joe Morris, Severn School, who won the Laser Radial Division under very challenging conditions.
Saturday's report: The day started with 30+ kts of winds, rolling seas, and a postponement ashore. The weather forecasters were predicting a mid-afternoon window where the breeze would die down to 15-20 kts, so we braced and prepared. After weathering a squall line on the water, the RC was able to squeeze in three races per division before the front cleared and brought with it strong WNW winds.
Sunday's report: Even with a rescheduled earlier arrival time of 0700, the weather did not cooperate. Winds gust consistently in the 25-35 kt range prevented any sailing. The RC waited until 1000 before abandoning for the day. Indian Harbor YC treated the competitors, their coaches, and their families to a wonderful awards lunch compete with a raffle (compliments of Vanguard) and pictures for all of the competitors (compliments of photoboat.com). Results are posted on the Indian Harbor website: http://www.indianharboryc.com/cressy07.htm ..

District Team Racing Championship Qualifier - ODU October 28, 2006.
Despite high winds, the teams got a full rotation and the full championship round completed. Much credit goes to Old Dominion University for hosting this regatta. Winds ranged from 16 to 31 knots according to the sail flow weather station which is on a channel marker on the edge of the course. The highest winds came later in the day, therefore the consolation round was not sailed, although there was a top four sailoff. The qualifier results are based on this first round. Several of the places after the top 4 were very close, however all the top eight will be eligible to attend the District Fall Final Team Racing Championship at St Mary's College of Maryland on November 11, 2006. Top 8 qualifiers were 1. Norfolk Collegiate School, 2. Monsignor Donovan, 3. Severn School, 4. Toms River South, 5. Gunston, 6. Broadneck, 7. Annapolis, and 8. Stonybrook School.

2007 Spring Season Fleet Racing Championship

The top three finishers in the April 22 spring season Fleet Racing Championship hosted by Toms River Yacht Club and Ocean County College were:

All three of these teams qualified to attend the 2006 Mallory National Championships.

2007 Spring Pre-Qualifier Team Race at the US Naval Academy
2007 Spring Pre-Qualifier Team Race at the US Naval Academy

The April 14th spring season Team Racing qualifier was hosted by the US Naval Academy. The breeze was relative steady and the two courses could be held off the seawall to allow full observation and equal access coaching. Fourteen teams sailed in the event, with 21 420s and 21 FJs so that no boat changing was necessary. The teams were seeded according to their results in their league qualifiers (thanks to Stovy Brown for the organization help). The top four teams in each division qualifed to attend the 8 team finals at ODU on April 28th. The sailing was very close in the 420 division, resulting in a 3-way tie between Broadneck, Brighton, and Christchurch for 3rd (and 4th), which finally had to be resolved by points after a tiebreaker round failed to resolve the tie. A tiebreaker round was also sailed in the FJ class to break a tie for 4th place between Archbishop Spalding, Toms River, and Patuxent.

2007 Mallory National Championship

Severn School repeats last year's success! They finished 3rd overall, ahead of all but 2 of the top US sailing teams. Broadneck was 14th and Monsignor Donovan was 15th, an excellent finish to their season considering that the competition was a selection of the very best of the large number of teams across the US that tried to qualify.
