HERSCHEL M. BROWNE MEMORIAL TROPHY

Herschel Browne sailed in the first East Coast sponsored El Toro nationals, held in 1972 at Gunston Cove on the Potomac River. 72 toros were in attendance. He was the only person to be Commodore of both the National Yacht Club and the Potomac River Sailing Association. The trophy is awarded for the best performance in a series of 4 regattas during the season.

The Boyers died in a traffic accident on the way to an El Toro regatta. The Bull is mounted on a block which was part of the original Washington Sailing Marina Clubhouse, site of the
formation of Fleet #16,

Atlantic Coast Championship Bull


The ACC Senior trophy was inaugurated in 1970. From 1997 until 2000 the DC Area Fleet and the Long Island Fleet hosted the Atlantic Coast Championship in alternate years. Even years were in the Long Island area and odd years were in the DC area. There were also intermediate and junior trophies that have not been awarded recently.
