Four Letter Word List

This page is dedicated to the premise that today's children need to use more four-letter words. It always pays to broaden your vocabulary. During the summers of 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999, Barry Segal of Segal's Solar Systems, Inc. provided renewable energy materials, worksheets, and instruction for the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (CMST). This is a program for gifted and talented middle school and high school students, held each summer at the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore. In June of 2000, Mr. Segal delivered an evening presentation, to CMST students, on the mathematics of potential energy, kinetic energy, and solar energy. He explained that it is virtually impossible to describe the wonders of Physics and energy without using four letter words. Learn the following words and use them often:

Energy-Related Four-Letter Words:

Bond - noun. What gets broken in chemical reactions that release energy.
Cold - adjective.  The state that describes the inhabitants of a home
 with an oil-fired furnace when the oil tank runs dry.  (can also be a noun)
Feet - noun. The parts of the body that most people stand
 on when they have no chair.
Foot - noun. In mensuration, a unit which measures distance in the
 Foot-Pound-Second (FPS) System of Units.  One foot is 12 inches long.
Four - adjective. The integer between three and five that is also the
 square of two.
Heat - noun. What the sun can supply us in almost unlimited quantities.
  (can also be a verb)
Inch - noun or verb. In mensuration, A small unit which measures distance
 in the "English System."  An inch is defined as 2.54 centimeters where a
 centimeter is defined in the CGS (Centimeter-Gram-Second) version of the
 Metric System.
Mile - noun. In mensuration, a distance of 5280 of those "foot" things.
Unit - noun. The "WHAT" after a "HOW MUCH" as in "number units"
 (5 feet, 10 pounds, 300 Watts, 100 BTUs)
Volt - noun. The unit of electrical pressure.  The electrical pressure
 required to push one Ampere of current through one Ohm of resistance.
Watt - noun. A unit of power, usually referring to electrical power.
  One Volt of electrical pressure, pushing one Ampere of electrical
 current, delivers power at the rate of one Watt.  One Watt of power
 delivers one Joule of energy per second.
Wind - noun. A renewable energy source that can power your home
 from the kinetic energy of air.  In 2001, Wind farms were installed in
 Southwestern Pennsylvania at a cost of one dollar per Watt.  This is now
 less expensive than nuclear power plants.
Work - noun. What you can do when you are NOT watching Television.
 Force acting through a distance. Work = (Force) x (Distance) x (the Cosine
 of the angle between them). (can also be a verb)

Nonenergy-Related Four-Letter Words:

Acre - noun. In mensuration, a unit of area equal to 43,560 square feet. 
Bell - noun. A buzzer with an extended movable arm that hits a large
 flattened half sphere "sounding gong" thereby making a louder racket
 than the buzzer would alone.
Corn - noun. A grain which is used for food. It can also be made into
 alcohol, which can be used for fuel.  We can't make much alcohol from
 an acre of corn.  (see hemp)
Fact - (check back in the future for definition)
Fear - (check back in the future for definition)
Feel - verb. What you do with your hands when assembling a rack
 for your solar modules and can't see what you are doing.
Find - (check back in the future for definition)
Fill - verb. What a solar-powered pump does to your water tank.
Flag - noun. Cloth, plastic, or a picture which is the recognized symbol
 of a country. The Stars and Stripes flag of the United States of America
 is the symbol of Freedom and Democracy throughout the world.
Food - noun. What animals (and therefor humans) eat.
Fool - noun. The largest group of homo-sapians on the planet.
Foul - adjective. The smell on a beach after an oil-tanker leaks close to shore.
Full - adjective. The state describing your tank after your solar-powered
 pump lifts water from your well, pond, river, or lake and deposits it in
 the tank.
Good - adjective. An adjective that describes solar panels.
Have - verb. (check back in the future for definition)
Hear - verb. What you rarely do to your teachers in school.
Hemp - noun. A plant which can be turned into rope, yarn, or alcohol.  An
 acre of land growing hemp can produce ten times as much alcohol as corn.
 Hemp is often confused with another plant which can be turned into drugs.
 All hemp used in the United States must be imported because the U.S.
 Government has mistakenly prohibited the growing of hemp in the United States.
Here - adjective. Where I am.
Hole - noun. (check back in the future for definition)
Lake - noun. A large geological basin that supplies water to a
 solar-powered irrigation pump.
Luck - noun. (check back in the future for definition)
Mail - noun or verb. - (check back in the future for definition)
Male - noun or adjective. - (check back in the future for definition)
Many - adjective. The number of ways Segal's Solar Systems
 can provide you with renewable energy. 
Must - adverb. The "no choice" adverb.
Need - noun. What you MUST have. (can also be a verb)
Page - noun. (check back in the future for definition)
Pipe - noun. The long and thin tube, usually made from metal,
 plastic, or rubber, through which solar-powered pumps move water
 from a well, pond, or river to your home, garden, or farm.
Pole - noun. A tall, thin, vertical structure that supports your
 solar modules or your windmill.
Poll - noun or verb. (check back in the future for definition)
Pond - noun. A small geological basin that supplies water to a
 solar-powered irrigation pump.
Pump - noun or verb. A mechanical device, hopefully solar or wind
 powered, which is used to lift water from a well, move the water
 through a hose or pipe, and then bring the water into your home.
Sick - adjective. A description of you after eating too much candy,
 cookies, soda, and French Fried potatoes.
Stop - noun or verb. (check back in the future for definition)
Talk - What mem do but don't admit, what women do and do admit, and
 what teenage girls do continuously.
Tall - adjective. What the owner of Segal's Solar Systems is not.
Tank - noun. The three dimensional structure on your property
 that is filled with water by your solar-powered pump and your well.
That - adjective. Tells you that the next item is far away.
Them - adjective. More than one person who are NOT us. 
Thin - adjective. NOT mid-range, fat, or wide.
This - adjective. Tells you that the next item is close by.
Toll - noun. A payment made by drivers to the city, county, or state
 to pay for our fine roads, bridges, and tunnels.
Walk - noun or verb. What people with gasoline-powered cars will be
 doing a lot of during the energy shortage beginning in 2010.
Wave - adjective. What we do with a flag. (Can also be a noun.)
Well - noun. A tall thin hole in the ground through which a
 solar-powered pump lifts water from the aquafer below to your home,
 garden, or farm.
Word - noun. The symbol or sound that educated people use to communicate.
Yell - noun or verb. What people who do not have renewable energy
 systems do when they get their electric or gas bill.
Your - adjective. Tells the world that the following item belongs to YOU.
