The Chemo Caps Ministry provides head coverings for patients who have lost their hair due to cancer or surgery.

Activities: Most of us know someone who has cancer and we feel that this ministry would be a way of helping them feel better about themselves and this also would be a way of showing them that others care about them and what they are going through.  The head coverings we make are crocheted caps, sewn turbans and hats, and a few of the ladies have made crocheted prayer or healing shawls.  We also teach each other different stitches or various techniques involved.  At the meetings, labels are attached to each item stating “Prayerfully Made Just For You” by the women of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 8615 Fort Smallwood Road, Pasadena Md. 21122.  Then each item is enclosed in a plastic bag, making them ready for distribution to the various Cancer Centers in our area.

Volunteers: The Chemo Caps Team would welcome any assistance in the preparation and distribution of the chemo caps.  Training is available if required.  Come join us in Christian fellowship with an opportunity to serve others.

Meetings: Our meetings take place at the Church on the second Thursday morning of each month.  Each meeting lasts about two hours during which time we either crochet or cut out patterns for the turbans and hats that we usually sew at home.

We have a monthly sign up by team members, who then make little gift bags for each teacher or mentor in our Christian Education program. The gift bags are not extensive, but show our volunteers that they are valued. It takes just an hour or so to come up with an idea, purchase items, package them, and bring them to Sunday School for delivery.

Christian Education also sponsors the annual Advent Event. Planning is done during Christian Education Meetings in October and November. Team members are asked to help provide food for the luncheon, and asked to participate in setting up and/or tearing down the room on the day of the event.

Sunday Bible School provides classes for 3 year old through adult that teach biblical principles and truths that form a solid foundation for living out our life.

Activities: The Sunday Bible School at Emmanuel Lutheran Church meets from 10:15am to 11:15am each Sunday.  Classes begin with 3 yr olds and continue through to adult education.  Our Sunday School year begins the first Sunday after Labor Day and continues until the Sunday before Memorial Day. Classes are divided by age groups and we have 2 formal teaching curriculums in use.  One is the Witness program, which features stories from the bible - traditionally teaching Old Testament stories in the fall, leading up to Jesus' birth at Christmas and then New Testament stories in the winter and spring.  The other curriculum also focuses on bible stories and teachings of Jesus and uses animated DVDs (created by former Disney animators). The second Sunday of each month is designated as Music Sunday and all kids in 6th grade and below meet together in Fellowship Hall for 15 minutes of music and fun before returning to regular classrooms.

The 7th grade-12th grade class meets in the youth trailer and deals with topics relevant to today's teens with regard to how faith and Christianity factor into daily life. There is a separate adult class in the library which also informally discusses various current events news articles.

The Sunday Bible School participates in several service projects during the year (school supplies, food sharing drive, get well program for shut-ins, church beautification in May) and there is an annual Christmas Play each December

Children are welcome to join at any time during the year - Please ask for Debbie Oltman (Sunday School Secretary) or Dawn Hoffmann (Superintendent) to sign up your children and take them to their classrooms.  There is no fee for Emmanuel's Sunday Bible School.  Come join the fun!

The Train Garden Ministry is a yearly fund raising activity sponsored by Emmanuel to meet and exceed our financial commitment of support to the North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON).  NCEON provides assistance to local families in northern Anne Arundel County who are experiencing extreme financial difficulties.

Activities: At the present time we rent space in the Marley Station Mall (old Friendly’s Location)  for year round maintenance and storage of the train garden.  In March of each year, a new train garden design begins and shortly thereafter the old garden is dismantled and work begins on the new garden.  Volunteers meet every Tuesday evening from 7-9:30pm to work on the garden.  The new garden is normally completed by early November.  The garden is opened daily from the middle of November to New Years Eve.  During that time, volunteers from Emmanuel, other churches in Northern Anne Arundel County, and many other organizations help maintain the operation of the trains and sell tickets for the prize drawings.  Ticket sales as well as visitor donations serve as the primary source of income for this fund raising activity.  The Train Garden is one of the largest sources of funding for NCEON and over the past sixteen years has provided more than $127,000 to support NCEON’s outreach activities.

Volunteers: The Train Garden Ministry relies heavily on a significant number of volunteers to conduct a successful fund raiser program.  Volunteers are needed on Tuesday evenings from March to November to help with dismantling the old garden and construction, wiring, and painting of the new garden.  Volunteers are also needed on a daily basis from the middle of November to New Year’s Eve to work two hour shifts for maintaining train operations and selling raffle tickets. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring this inspirational and fun outreach mission, contact the following.

The Ushers perform various duties before, during, and after the 9am and 11:30am worship services.

Duties: Ushers are divided into multiple teams and a schedule is developed that assures that team duties are rotated on a periodic basis.  Depending on the worship service, Ushers may perform most or all of the following duties:

  • Greet everyone at the door and hand out bulletins and blue card and any other important flyers
  • Set out the kids bags
  • Help people get seated, Set up extra chairs, if necessary
  • Find someone to take up the bread and wine
  • Close the doors after service begins – Open for people who step out during the service to keep the distraction down
  • Work the lights if that is part of the service … like Christmas eve and Tennebra (Good Friday Service)
  • Take the count – Record the weather
  • Collect the Offering, Take up with volunteers for bread and wine,  Remove the lids from the communion trays
  • Direct the congregation during Communion,  Replace the lids on the communion trays
  • Open the doors during the last song before the Pastor reaches the back of the church
  • Hand out the Extra’s as people are leaving
  • Collect the money and put it in the safe and collect the blue cards and put them on Bonnie’ desk
  • 9 AM Service – switch out the bulletins for 11 AM
  • Any other requests the Pastor may have before and during the service

Meetings: There are no scheduled meetings for the Ushers and training/instruction is provided as needed.  There is also a booklet that has a yellow cover in the church office detailing what the Usher’s duties are because they are slightly different for each service.

Volunteers: Ushers are needed for the 9am and 11:30am worship services.  Helping out with the service is rewarding and always appreciated.

Vacation Bible School is a five day (three hours per day) adventure normally held in August where children experience Bible stories through an interactive combination of music, art, science, games, worship, drama, and food. Emmanuel uses the Augsburg Fortress curriculum as a teaching guide to educate children and spread the word of God while having a good time.   The 2009 program will be centered on an imaginary Discovery Canyon.

Volunteers are needed to assist with pre and post Vacation Bible School activities such as planning, advertising, collecting supplies, decorating, set-up, and clean-up.  Volunteers are also needed during Vacation Bible School week to serve as teachers or helpers for the various activities to include music, art/craft, science, games, worship, drama, and food/snacks.

Meetings:  Minimal time during the month preceding Vacation Bible School is required to participate in the planning and preparation activities mentioned above.  Vacation Bible School itself runs five consecutive days during the hours of 9am-12pm daily.

The Women’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Association (WELCA) Ministry serves the congregation in many different capacities wherever and whenever a need arises.

Activities: WELCA is involved in many church support activities throughout the year. We conduct a "not-for-profit" sale of lilies for Easter and poinsettias for Christmas, sponsor a carnation project for Mother's Day (pink and white) and Father's Day (red and white), and have an ongoing Helping Hands "Wishing Well" project which began in 1990 inviting members to drop their pennies into the well to accumulate a mile of pennies, estimated to be 83,421.  The money realized from this is turned over to the church when it reaches increments of $200, and is to be used for emergencies when the need arises for members of the church or community.

Meetings: WELCA meets the first Monday of each month from September through June at 7:30 pm in the Library..  In September, due to the Labor Day holiday, we meet on Tuesday of that week.  If Christmas and New Year's Day fall on our meeting date, we adjust our meeting schedule.  .

Volunteers: Come join WELCA for fellowship, Bible study, and many opportunities to serve our congregation.

The Youth Ministry provides a venue for our youth to become aware of and understand the world and community around them.  This Christian based non-judgmental setting is the perfect environment for the youth of today to open up and feel better about them self and perhaps make a difference for someone else.

Activities: The Youth Ministry is involved in many activities to include  Friday Night Get together, Snow tubing, Movie Nights, Pancake Breakfast, Spaghetti Dinner, Christian Concert Night, Marlu Ridge retreat, Theme Park retreat, and Community Clean Up. These are just some of the things we have done and we continue to seek out new activities both within and outside of our church.

Meetings: The Youth Ministry meets the 4th Sunday of the month in 3pm.  We are currently planning a trip to New Orleans in July 2009 so right now we are meeting the first and third Sunday of each month.

New Members: So if you feel that this is something that you would be interested in being a part of give me a call or just show up.  Remember the 4th Sunday of each month at 3:00 pm.
