In 1996 The Tintinnabulators, a community concert handbell choir, needed a place
to rehearse and to store their 5-octave set of bells and equipment.
Asbury furnished that place, and in return, had the opportunity to use the
bells. During the summer of 1996 Alberta Stornetta took over the fledgling group
of ringers as Doug Beck, then Director of Music, left for another position.
By 1997 our small beginning had grown into two choirs -- a youth group and an
adult group. When long time Asbury secretary, Betty Kemenyas, died; her family
established memorial funds to buy handbells. We mounted a campaign whereby one
could contribute the price of a bell and have that bell dedicated as a memorial
or in honor of a specific person. In 3 months we raised $15,000, enough to
purchase a 5-octave set of English handbells cast by the Malmark Company in
Plumsteadville, PA. Our bell teams have assisted in worship at Asbury, as well
as participated in concerts and festivals at other churches and local community
activities.
In 2007, we are celebrating our 10th year of ministry at Asbury and in the
neighborhood. |
