JournalismJobs.com: ***A top job-seeker site!

• If there's any site that will steal E&P's traditional thunder in guiding journalists to jobs, this is it. A good search engine, with selective categories and an e-mail notification system make this a top choice for job-searchers.
• The site was founded in May, 1999, by Dan Rohn, a freelance journalist (formerly with The Washington Post) and is operated in cooperation with the Columbia Journalism Review.
• Now all they have to do is get employers to post jobs here, and so far it looks like they're doing a good job of it; Rohn claims the site gets 250,000 page views per month (as of December, 1999)

Journalism Job List (National Diversity JobBank):

• Technically known as the National Diversity JobBank, this site cuts right to the chase. A listing of available jobs is kept right up to date, and it's aimed at journalists and includes opportunities for journalists with online experience. Many other sites eventually link to this one, which is maintained by the NNA and the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville.
• In order to gain access to the job listings one must file a resume to get a 60-day password. There still is no charge.

RIP: Alas, the keeper of the "intelligence report," Maurice Tamman, a reporter at Florida Today, says the task became too overwhelming and forced him to quit the project. Tamman has abandoned it and left it posted as an online memorial of what could have been, but his link is no longer working.  Sorry.

Jobs in Journalism (Freeservers.com):

An extensive list of places to look for jobs in journalism with a nice little search engine.

A guide brought to my attention by Saul Daniels at the LA Times.

The site, by the way, has an interesting set of pages from the school of journalism at Kent State University in Ohio.

Poisonkitchen.com:

Not exactly a jobs page, and a bit too profane for many; nevertheless, there may be some good job leads to be found here.  If one is seeking an outlet for newsroom rantings, however, this is the place to let it go, which makes it a handy site for job-seekers.

The site, nicknamed Pk.com (unlikely to find "preachers' kids at this site, though), is maintained by Andrew Lyons and he's trying to revive the spirit of Mo Tamman's defunct Newsmait (see above).

Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE):

• This key organization not only leads one deep into research, but they also have a neat job listing, and may be one of the swiftest on the Web in updating their listings.
• This is for hard-nosed investigators; entry level jobs are not likely on this listing, though many newspapers will take a chance on a recent grad with good CAR credentials.
• The site includes job listings for broadcast journalists.

Sunoasis Jobs for writers, editors and copywriters:
(formerly, The Laughing Sun: Avalanche of Jobs for Writers):***Updated daily!

• This is a "literary journal" with jobs listed for journalists, new media personnel and freelancers. The list is regionalized for convenience and offers an e-mail newsletter.
• Literally runs an "avalanche" of job listings and is nicely categorized.
• Yes, it is updated daily, and it keeps growing and improving. Good search engines added recently.

National Conference of Editorial Writers: ***Excellent for specialists

• A small organization with an important job bank for those looking to join editorial page staffs. This site is updated only as openings come in to its Webmaster, but if timed properly can provide leads to jobs at some outstanding newspapers. Updated as new listings come in, roughly about twice each month, rarely faster and often much less frequent. Someone scouring the job boards will probably find the same jobs posted elsewhere sooner; nevertheless, NCEW provides a convenient gathering.
• Most openings for editorial writers demand extensive experience. There is some overlap with jobs for columnists. Its also one of the few job sites that openly solicits particular philosophic and ideologic perspectives.

Take NOTE: Check individual newspaper sites:

• It might pay to browse individual newspaper sites. Job openings at a newspaper are often posted on its Web site. Look especially in those corners where they post "talk to us" or "contact us" links or where they list who's on their staffs. Some prefer labels such as "employment opportunities."

Alaska Jobs (U. of Alaska-Anchorage): **Visit its "electronic reading room."

• When I was teaching in Vermont and students inquired about jobs in journalism, I gave them two general guidelines: Be willing to 1) begin at a job with low pay (online journalism is improving this); 2) go anywhere in the country, in particular, places such as Wyoming and Alaska (I could have added Vermont, but the print journalism opportunities there are few).
• This site provides a guide to jobs in Alaska from its "electronic reading room."
• A surprisingly good set of listings is compiled at this site -- again in the "electronic reading room."

America's Job Bank:

• This isn't specifically for journalists, but when an organization the size of the U.S. Dept. of Labor sponsors a site for job seekers, it's probably worth a peek.

California Chicano News Media Association (CCNMA): ***Having some HTML problems here (04/10/01)

• Big newspapers on the prowl for diversity in their newsrooms list openings here, but there's no bar to anyone answering the ads. This site focuses on the West Coast and its inland areas.

California Journalism Job Bank:

• Primarily for California, though some out-of-state jobs are listed, this is an excellent example of what can be done in attracting talent to a region. This site is part of the fine California Journalism Online site sponsored by four area journalism organizations.
• Salaries for journalists in California are listed here and compared to national averages.

Career Builder (formerly Career Path):

• This site claims Help Wanted Ads from across the nation, and claims to be the most visited job site on the Internet.
• The classified ads from The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, and The Washington Post all in one place!
• Not necessarily journalism jobs; in fact, j-jobs are often hard to come by on these listings.

C-net search:

• C-net gathers the major search engines onto its search page, and it includes a job-searching engine that it calls "Monster Board." It's worth the effort to plug in the words for the job one is seeking in the city one wants to find work to discover some unknown paths.
• Hint: Look for news jobs under the "Other-editorial" category and the "Other-journalism" category.

Copyeditor Newsletter listing (aka McMurry Newsletters):

• If one is looking for a desk job, this may be the best place online to find a position. Good newspapers list jobs here -- along with some bad ones -- and the information is up-to-date and relatively complete.
• This used to be a neat site for newspaper copyeditors, but it's gone commercial with a large newsletter enterprise.  Still has some good job opportunities though.
  

Gannett Joblist:

• One links to editorial and finds a long list of job openings at more than 90 Gannett papers across the country. Listed by job specialty, then by newspaper. Includes openings at the Washington-based national newspaper, USAToday.
• One Gannett editor tells me she goes outside the company for 90 percent of the jobs that are advertized, and Gannett has established a fine reputation for hiring women and minorities.

Headhunter.com

• Some high-powered jobs offered here, but not much for print journalists unless, as some say, one is ready to "sell one's soul."

International Herald Tribune Job Listings:

• This site will get one to the newspaper's home page. The search for jobs goes from there.
• Few journalism jobs here, but some interesting overseas opportunities.
• The IHT has its home office in Paris, although it is operated jointly by the Washington Post and The New York Times.

Jobs.com

• This is the kind of Web site that has newspaper classified ad execs quaking and probably strengthens the argument for keeping the Washington Post's classified online presence so formidable.

JobWeb (National Assn. of Colleges and Employers): ***Recently unavailable URL (4/10/01)

Knight-Ridder newsroom jobs:

• Part of the Detroit Free Press's server, this listing allegedly is updated weekly, but more likely every three weeks; it also provides some good tips to job searchers as well.
• Incidentally, with a little navigating, one can find an excellent collection of resources here for doing research and investigating.

New York Times Internet Job Guide:

• A site that goes beyond jobs for journalists by offering a fairly comprehensive menu of where to look for jobs.
• Includes links to places to get help in preparing resumes, and even leads to a site on advice for "telecommuting."

• It takes a little navigation, but once there one uncovers some up-to-date job listings, almost all of them online positions.

Society for Environmental Journalists:

• Not only a listing of jobs for environmental journalists, but a good basic listing of places to look for a journalism job.

South Asian Journalists Association:

• A classy listing of jobs and an extensive listing of other job sites aimed at South Asian journalists (India, Pakistan, etc.) and their diaspora.
• The LA Times and the NY Times put their perpetual listing for desk editors on this site.

Towson State University (Baltimore, Md.):

• Journalism job links from this school just outside Baltimore. The site's quick list is much like the now dated list at News Mait (above), with a few twists.
• This list should be especially useful to those seeking jobs around Baltimore orWashington, D.C.

CLASSIFIEDS (online) at major newspapers:

• If one knows how to move about a site, get into the index of The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, etc., and search for "jobs" or keywords such as "edit," "news," "writer," or "reporter." Expect some surprises, such as all the credit manager jobs that show up in response to the search for "edit."

Wall Street Journal's Career site:

• As one might suspect, jobs in business and economics prevail here, but the advice is universal.

Washington Post:

• Recently relaunched as washingtonjobs.com, this is a fine site for people in the D.C. area.
• Greatly improved in the relaunch, though it still demands some tedious navigating, those who wish to cut to the chase should get to the Post's jobs matrix..

Federal Computer Week

• This online magazine has an extensive listing of job opportunities with federal agencies.
• By the way, journalists might find backtracking at this site an interesting excursion to some good stories.

Michigan Live (Classifieds):

• Eight newspapers across the state of Michigan provide a fairly deep pool of job opportunities, though not necessarily jobs in journalism.

NationJob Online Jobs Database:

• Employers and companies are encouraged to list their openings in this massive database. One should link to the home page for NationJob if one's employment interests go beyond journalism and other media.

NewsPros:

• The site of a consulting group aimed at helping students and young professionals find their way into the business. Heavy on broadcast journalism.

Online Career Center

• I haven't probed deeply at this site, but it looks like the place to search. While not specifically for journalists, it covers any company that registers by state and by alphabetical listing. People in the job market definitely need to poke around here with resumes ready to go.
• If one is seeking a list of companies with an eye toward querying for jobs, one can find addresses at the CompaniesOnline list.

USA Jobs:

• A listing of government jobs that includes several under the category of editor and writer.

Freelance Online JobBank:

• Since July 21, 1998 only those who join the organization can gain access to the jobbank. This link provides information on becoming a member.
• As of December 31, 2003, Freelance Online service will end its operations.  Too bad!
  

Writenews.com:

• This site is updated infrequently and aims at writing jobs beyond newspapers.
• The home site of Writenews.com is a thesaurus of links to writers' sources.

About work:

• Admittedly, this isn't exactly a job listing, but if one can overcome the sense that the page is offering therapy for frustrated job-seekers, one may find some worthwhile tips here.

Career Magazine (Online):

• For tips on just about every aspect of job-searching in addition to a fine job-searching database, check this site.

• Some high-powered jobs offered here, but not much for print journalists unless as some say one is ready "to sell one's soul."
• Watch out for hidden costs springing out of searches here.

• Not actually a job-offering site, but a neat place to calculate the costs of changing jobs and relocating.
• Good advice site.

Job Shark:

• Not limited to jobs for journalists, but if one is seeking a job in Canada this appears to be a good place to begin.
• Search software makes it easy to find journalism in its database.

Jeff Gaulin's Canadian Journalism Jobs Board:

Gaulin, himself a journalism graduate of the University of Western Ontario and currently working on an MBA in Victoria at the University of Victoria, appears to be setting himself up as an online agent for journalists in Canada seeking jobs, especially those looking to find jobs beyond the Canadian borders.

• Not just for journalists but for Canadians looking across their vast country for work. Currently, this site lists over 4,000 job openings.

• A media company that lists editorial vacancies.
• Leans heavily toward freelancers.

Jobs in television:

• Easily the most comprehensive site listing jobs available in television broadcasting.

Jobs in radio (at NPR, anyway):

• I suspect many of these jobs are filled from inside the organization, but this is a fine listing for those interested in radio careers.
• As one might expect, almost all these jobs are in Washington, D.C.
• The magazine that covers public broadcasting, Current, also provides a listing for jobs at PBS stations across the nation.

CareerWeb (Jobs in Israel):

• Looking for a job in Israel? This is the place to look.

Habitat for Humanity:

• Despite depending heavily on volunteers, this organization offers many salaried opportunities for communicators.
• A glaring omission of salary figures permeates the surprisingly lengthy list.

Job Leads (InterChristo):

• This is a site designed specifically for people looking for positions in some form of Christian ministry, most of them related to church or parachurch organizations. It requires a registration and a hefty fee for three months of leads (about $20 per month).

Microsoft Job Search:

• I know this sounds like an ad for going to work for Bill Gates, but from this site a check of "Search our job database" will put a job hunter in a search engine that probes the entire U.S.
• It takes a little getting used to, and you'll probably go up some dead ends, but it's worth a look.

Military Spouses Career Network:  ***Site seems to have disappeared (4/10/01)

• This unofficial site aimed at spouses of those in the U.S. military also provides a good list of "employment links" aimed at that group.
• This site recently moved to a new URL; not only a good site for jobs, it contains lots of information relevant to military spouses. A worthwhile visit for military folks.

Academe Today:

• It's true this is the site of the Chronicle of Higher Education, and it's true that 95-99 percent of the jobs listed here require Ph.D.s or other terminal graduate degrees, but the CHE's classifieds section also lists many jobs for writers and journalists at colleges and universities. Look carefully at categories such as Communication, Journalism, and Writing and check out the Professional listing.
• To get the latest listings, one must register as a subscriber. The week-old listings are available free.
• Searchers will not find many ads here for newspaper jobs.

AEJMC academic positions: ***Check here first.

• The largest organization of college and university teachers in journalism and mass communication maintains a list of available positions.
• This list slows down in spring and summer, but gets hot between December and April.

Council of Christian Colleges and Universities:

• This organization changed its name from the Coalition of etc. to the Council of etc. in order to avoid confusion with the politically right-wing Christian Coalition. A wise move for a very savvy and important academic organization.

Jobs in Academia (Princeton U.):

• Want to teach at the college level? Check this site's offerings and advice.
