MidAtlantic Scholastic Sailing Association Q&As

Are you representing a high school in the Mid-Atlantic area (NY, PA, DE, MD, and VA) and do you want to sail this semester? Here's what to do:

1. Count the available sailors.
a. If you have at least 2 skippers and 2 crew in 8th grade and above from the same high school, including "feeder" schools, you can participate in the double-handed events and the single-handed (Laser) event(s) - which, in the fall semester is usually just the qualifiers to see who goes to the single-handed national championship (you need to be at least in the 9th grade for qualifiers).
b. If you have fewer sailors, you can still participate in the single-handed events.

2. Download the membership form from and send it in with your dues. Be sure to name all the school sailors on the form.

3. Sign up for regattas by sending in an email. If after the selection date, you should go to the MASSA home page and find this semester's schedule/results page to check if there are any openings left - or sign up as an alternative in case a team has to cancel. There often are also JV regattas and possibly local area regattas near you that will be listed on the web site.

4. Bring your life jacket (and protective clothing if it is cold) to the regatta.
