MASSA 2000 SPRING SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP WAS WON BY CLAY JOHNSON, TOMS RIVER HIGH SCHOOL, NEW JERSEY: [Full Results for the Singlehanded Championships, held at the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point]
MASSA Spring Qualifiers:
Point Pleasant (1st), Annapolis High (2nd) and Severn School won the fleet racing qualifiers at Navy and represented MASSA at the Mallory National Championships in Long Beach, California
Key School (1st) and Annapolis High won the team race qualifiers at St Marys College and represented MASSA at the Baker National team racing Championships at Old Dominion University. Stony Brook (3rd) and Severn (4th) were alternates.
SEVERN SCHOOL WINS OVERALL FALL DOUBLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP:
The overall fall championship is based on the two best regatta results plus the fall championship (which counts double). Severn School of Annapolis accumulated more points despite Annapolis High School winning the last two regattas of the season, including the fall championship at St Marys College of Maryland. The full fall standings are: Severn 59pts, Pt Pleasant 57, Annapolis 52, Hampton Roads 48, McQuaid 46, Stony Brook 44, Southern Regional NJ 40, Mamaraneck 39, Annapolis Area Christian 29, Loyola (Baltimore) 26, Key School (Annapolis) 24, St Marys (Annapolis) 20, Gunston MD 20, Southern High MD 16, Port Jefferson 14, Northport 11, Broadneck (Annapolis) 10, St Anthony’s 10, Newport News 9, Schreiber 9, Patuxent 8, Riverhill 8, Christchurch 6, Manhasset 4, Southhampton 4, Severna Park 3, and Scarsdale 1.
The SINGLEHANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WAS WON BY MASSA SCHOOLS!! The Cressy Cup at Newport, RI, Oct 29, 30, and 31 included both radial rig Lasers and full rig Lasers (16 in each class). The winners in each class shared the National Championship. CONGRATULATIONS TO PEETER MUST (Lakewood High School, New Jersey who won the radial rig class and SPENCER WEBER of Southern Regional High School, Manahawkin, New Jersey, who won the full rig class. They consistantly sailed well in a wide range of conditions, from light to moderate winds the first day to hard gusts over 25 knots the second. The other two MASSA entries also did well. Chris Ashley of Pt Pleasant High School, New Jersey was 4th in the radial fleet and Matt Goettling, also of Point Pleasant was 6th in the full rig fleet.
The Cressy Cup Qualifiers for the MASSA District were hosted by Southern Regional Sailing Team at Surf City Yacht Club on October 2, 1999. Breezes at mid-day were about 5 knots increasing to 10-12 in the afternoon. Racing was continuous on two separate courses with 15 competitors in the full-rig laser and 12 in the radial. Peeter Must of Lakewood HS took a first place finish in the radial fleet with 19 points, followed by Chris Ashley of Point Pleasant HS with 28 points for second place. Spencer Weber of Southern Regional HS won the full-rig division with 34 points, followed by Matt Goetting of Point Pleasant HS with 37 points.
