The overall school year (fall 2003 and spring 2004) championship standings can be seen by clicking here. Congratulations to Annapolis High School, Maryland, who won both the fall and spring championships which firmly established them in first place overall for the entire school year. Southern Regional edged out Monsignor Donovan by only one point for second place for the school year. Norfolk Collegiate School, of Virginia, was in a still very respectable fourth place for the year by only one more point, followed closely by Severn School of Annapolis in fifth place of 21 schools who participated in enough regattas to be scored.
The fall championship standings can be seen by clicking here, and the fall district regatta results by clicking here. This was the final season with the scoring based on a full schedule of district regattas. The league system, established at the winter meeting following the fall season, now has fewer district regattas and the leagues select who can attend them. Annapolis High School emerged the winner in the fall, followed by Norfolk Collegiate and Hampton Roads Academy, who were tied for second place. Two New Jersey schools closely followed them, Southern Regional and Monsignor Donovan in fourth and fifth place, respectively, of the 35 schools participating in the regattas.
The spring district championship points standings can be seen by clicking here, and the results of the spring district regattas can be seen by clicking here. In the transition to the new league structure, the spring championship standings were based on the old system where the best two of the district regattas were counted for the overall season championship points. Annapolis High School emerged the winner, followed by Monsignor Donovan and Southern Regional who were tied for second place. The top six schools were filled out by Severn School, Pt Pleasant Boro, and Norfolk Collegiate, with 26 schools participating in the regattas.
Mallory Qualifiers: The regatta at Kings Point, Saturday April 24th, was the qualifier to see which teams represented MASSA at the Mallory National Championships in New Orleans, May 8-9. The top three teams were Southern Regional, Monsignor Donovan, and Annapolis High Schools, who subsequently sailed at the Mallory National Championships. Monsignor Donovan had the best finish in the National Championships of our three teams - a very respectable 8th place.
Baker Qualifiers: The qualifier for the Baker National Team Racing Championships was held at Georgetown University on May 1st. The regatta was extremely close. All the teams appeared to be very competent. Annapolis initially appeared to be a shoo-in since they were undefeated in the first two rounds. However the final four sail-off turned everything around. First, Severn School eliminated Annapolis, and then in the finals, Southern Regional eliminated Severn! Southern Regional represented us at the National Baker Championships which was held at the Naval Academy this year. Southern Regional finished in 9th place in this extremely competitive regatta.
The MASSA Single-handed Qualifiers to see who represents us in the Cressy National Championships was held October 4th in New Jersey, hosted by Ocean County College, Monsignor Donovan High School and the Island Heights Yacht Club
