The El Toro, an 8 foot sailing dinghy, is one of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association's one design racing classes. It is a true dual purpose dinghy,
serving many cruisers as a tender, and yet furnishing very challenging and tactical racing with very evenly matched boats.
The Fleet 16 Chesapeake Bay High Point Champion for many years was a Jim Ayres- built toro that had been towed behind
Nightingale on many cruises up and down the Chesapeake Bay. The sailing is open to all - the age of the yearly
CBYRA high point champion has varied from 12 to 73 years old.
For information on plans, fleets in other areas, etc., you may contact the National El toro Association at 1014 Hopper

Cherry Blossom/Ellie Ayres Tidal Basin Regatta 2008 -- April 26th
Pictures by Noon ------ Jefferson Memorial & El toros
The 2008 Ellie Ayres Cherry Blossom regatta had a worrysome weather forecast in that thunderstorms were due to blow through DC but the forecasters weren't sure when. Most fortunately for us, they held off until evening and we had a great sunny morning with temperatures up to 80 or so. The winds were very light and it was challenging to keep the boats moving at time, given that this was the first time out this year for most of us and we had to relearn everything we had forgotten over the winter. A "new" El toro sailor at this regatta, was Chris Mason, who actually was not a "new" toro sailor but had sailed with Jacie years ago and won the 1974 Jrs at Huntington Lake, California. However, this was his first time back in a toro for many many years and he was having fun, but still getting the feel of the boat again. Many thanks to Val Taliaferro who, as usual, made the arrangements for the race and got the required permits, plus providing the inflatable race committee boat. Jim and Ellie Ayres's daughter, Jacie Swenson, did a great job as race committee while Jacie's son and daughter sailed. Kyle won again this year and aced all the races (and he had a cheering section on a sightseeing paddle boat or two). Others traded off the top spots and especially noteworthy was Hank Muma who is always tough to beat in light air, probably due to his many years of toro sailing experience, although his age is classified information. Overall: 1. Kyle Swenson, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Hank Muma, 4. Geoff Schneider, 5. Bill Schneider, 6. Kendall Swenson, 7. Carol Jones, 8. Dave Littleton, 9. Val Taliaferro, and 10. Chris Mason.

Tuckahoe Regatta, 2008 -- June 7th
We sure have had some violent weather blowing through here this spring, but it calmed down just in time for the Tuckahoe Regatta. But it sure was humid and hot - in the mid 90's! - And, on the drive North to Tuckahoe, there was lots of fog with all the recent rain boiling out of the ground - couldn't even see anything off the Susquehanna River Bridge, but fortunately when we got to Tuckahoe, the fog had cleared up. Carol Jones organized another fun event - it is entirely different to be racing up and down a bendy river than just sailing in the open around fixed marks. The winds were generally light which further added to the formidable tactics needed to balance the puffs with the current. An interesting change this year was that one of the islands was the upstream mark rather than a buoy. That worked out well, except that I (Bill Schneider) was ahead at that point, having found a nice breeze along the previous shore to which I could just barely point close enough to stay 2 feet of the shore, found a large wind hole on the other side of the island which let Geoff and Brian choose a better way. I did almost pass Brian toward the finish downriver. He was distracted by some shoreside scenery, but he recovered nicely. The rest of the fleet weren't far behind, considering the variable winds and currents (the final 3 finished within seconds of each other), but Carol showed her familiarity with the river by finishing a close 4th. Griff Jones ran the committee boat, Tracey Rich took the pictures and neighbors helped out on the committee & chase boats. Results: 1. Geoff Schneider, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Bill Schneider, 4. Carol Jones, 5. Hank Muma, 6. Val Taliaferro, & 7. Chisolm McAvoy.

The Tom Jones Invitational/Rogers Regatta on the Corsica River, June 21st
The 2nd annual Tom Jones Invitational Regatta was held at Ship Point next to Emory Creek on the Corsica River north of Centreville, Maryland. Reed Rogers organized the regatta for us, and also sailed in on of our extra toros (although the overall results don't reflect it, she was sailing quite well once she figured out the boat - she steadily moved up and finished 2nd in the final race). The weather was just perfect, sunny, warm, with a steady breeze up the river that was just right for El toros. We were even entertained by a few cownosed rays waving their wings at us and a local ecologist had some diamond-back terrapins on display to pet. We got six full triangle races off followed by a lunch and awards provided by Reed. Results: 1. Brian Taliaferro, 2. Bill Schneider, 3. Geoff Schneider, 4. Hank Muma, 5. Dave Littleton, 6. Reed Rogers, & 7. Carol Jones.

Cherry Blossom/Ellie Ayres Tidal Basin Regatta 2007 -- April 28th
Pictures by Jacie ------ Rigging those toros for the regatta

Downwind leg - Kendall Swenson and Kyle Swenson ----------- Fortunately we didn't have to round the Washington Monument
This year's Cherry Blossom/Ellie Ayres regatta provided us with a fairly steady wind from the direction of the Washington Monument. As the regatta progressed, the wind speed did pick up with some fun gusts, but no one went for a swim, although an occasional sailor was spotted bailing a bit. As usual, the challenges were figuring out when and where the holes were as the wind dodged the trees on the shore. We had a good turnout, Bill Fry even drove down to his summer home in St Marys to retrieve one of this toros for this event. We especially welcomed two new people, Todd Croteau and Pete Greene, who did OK for the first time out. Mr. El Toro, Jim Ayres, was not able to attend (his doctor wouldn't have appreciated it) but his family was well represented. His grandson, Kyle Swenson and granddaughter, Kendall Swenson sailed and his daughter, Jacie Ayres Swenson and her husband Steve did a great job of running the regatta (using Val Taliaferro's brand new inflatable dinghy - a very nice yacht, indeed). Most appropriately for the Ellie Ayres regatta, Kyle edged out Geoff, the resident El toro expert, on a tie breaker. Brian Taliaferro was just one point behind to take 3rd place. Overall: 1. Kyle Swenson, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Brian Taliaferro, 4. Hank Muma, 5. Chisholm McAvoy, 6. Bill Schneider, 7. Bill Fry, 8. Kendall Swenson, 9. Dave Littleton, 10. Val Taliaferro, 11. Todd Croteau, and 12. Pete Greene.

Tuckahoe Spring Regatta, 2007 -- May 19th

A Jones Boats wooden crafted Toro ----- Pictures by Tracey Rich ----- Carol Jones downwind towards the finish
This year's Tuckahoe Regatta was definitely one of the more challenging. We had a good turnout at Carol Jones home on the Tuckahoe River, but some of us were having second thoughts about sailing as we were launching our toros off the dock and the wind gusts almost tore them out of our hands. Fortunately, they abated a bit as we lined up for the start, but one gust did put Hank Muma into the partially submerged island next to the starting line and we had to delay the start while he was being rescued from the grasses. Geoff and Brian proved masters of the gusty conditions right after the start and disapeared into the distance tacking up the river while the rest of use struggled with our boats, although Val looked like a definite third place candidate. We traded places in the back of the fleet for awhile and then the wind turned extra quirky - with holes of vacumn appearing seemingly at random, and the gusts moderating to puffs. Brian fell into the biggest vacumn and had to spend the rest of the race catching up. The rest of us also spent some time drifting back out with the tide while Hank, perhaps inspired by his island vacation before the race, somehow found a breeze along the northern side of the river and cruised past all of us. He caught up to Geoff at the upstream weather turning mark but Geoff held him off until just before the finish line where Hank again found just enough more breeze to edge by for a 1st place. The rest of the fleet was out of sight, far behind. In one respect, we all won, however, since no one at all capsized to swim in the cold water despite the gusty beginings of this race. Many thanks to Carol and friends for organizing a fun regatta - committee boat & chase boat. Results: 1. Hank Muma, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Bill Schneider, 4. Val Taliaferro, 5. Brian Taliaferro, 6. Chisolm McAvoy, 7. Carol Jones. |
The Tom Jones Invitational/Rogers Regatta on the Corsica River, June 23rd
The 1st annual Tom Jones Invitational Regatta was held at Ship Point next to Emory Creek on the Corsica River thanks to Chris Rogers, and Yacht Club Commodore Reed Rogers. They provided some fine weather, not too hot, not too cold, with just-right winds which maintained the same direction for the entire regatta. There were some holes, however, that some of us just never figured out (actually, only Brian Taliaferro seemed to know what it was doing), but we all had lots of fun and even a lunch provided by the Rogers afterwards. Final results: 1. Brian Taliaferro, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Hank Muma, 4. Bill Schneider, and tied for 5th: Val Taliaferro & Carol Jones.

Cambridge Annual Regatta/Atlantic Coast Championship, July 14th
The Atlantic Coast Championship was, as usual, part of the Cambridge Yacht Club annual regatta. The El toros shared the inside course with Penguins and Lasers and the race committee, as usual, did a superb job in fitting the classes together (the toros had a shorter weather mark which resulted in the classes finishing without waiting for each other. The winds were very light and Hank Muma led at the start of the first race. His superb light air techniques kept him there until, halfway up the weather leg the winds went left and increased to maybe 10 knots out of the west, blowing up the Choptank River. Bill Schneider lucked out and took advantage of being far left to take the lead at the weather mark. He just managed to keep Brian Taliaferro from passing him and won the 1st race. He managed to stay ahead of Brian somehow (he hasn't a clue how) for the second race too, but Brian sneaked around him at the second weather mark for the third race. The winds were picking up through the morning and, after lunch ashore, they were a bit imposing for the El toros (some of us get them mixed up with submarines in higher wind gusts) and we decided that 3 races were enough for the day. Ironically, the wind lightened up soon after we had the boats put away. Results: 1. Bill Schneider, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Val Taliaferro, 4. Hank Muma, 5. Carol Jones, 6. Geoff Schneider, and 7. Chisolm McAvoy

Plantation Regatta, August 12th
2007 Plantation Regatta - St Mary's City, MD.
Considering that some were not able to attend, we had a good turnout for the 2007 Plantation Regatta. The Frys did a great job (as usual) of handling race committee duties and providing us with a fine barbecue afterwards. There were 10 toro sailors, most of which managed to be in front of the fleet at least once during the 4 races. We had good toro-level winds mostly - only once did we have a rail-sitting gust and the wind kept up most of the time. However, it did shift a bit and at the weather mark, we had several vacumns followed by the entire fleet catching up so several times it seemed that everyone arrived at the jibe mark at the same time (how does that inside overlap rule work anyway?). And a good time was had by all. The final standings were: 1. Geoff Schneider, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Bill Schneider, 4. Skip Fry, 5. Hank Muma, 6. Emma Hurd, 7. Bill Fry, 8. Val Taliaferro, 9 Chisholm McAvoy, & 10. Ruth Lambert.

Presidents's/Leukemia Cup Regatta, September 8th

Brian covering Geoff & crew Noon --------------- Brian way ahead at weather mark ----------------- Did Carol have right of way?
This year's President's cup regatta at the Washington Sailing Marina was sailed on the inside course and, fortunately, the hydrilla were no longer there. We sailed 6 races under excellent conditions and had lots of fun (As always in El toros)! Brian won all but one race where Bill edged him out. Geoff had a student/friend along as crew and there wasn't enough wind to compensate. Some of the regulars had conflicts and couldn't get to this regatta, but they promised to bring signed excuses from their mothers. Final Results: 1. Brian Taliaferro 2. Bill Schneider, 3. Val Taliaferro 4. Carol Jones, and 5. Geoff Schneider |

Cherry Blossom/Ellie Ayres Tidal Basin Regatta 2006 April 29th

2006 toros on dock - picture by Jacie --------------------------- Kendall Swenson - picture by Ruth Lambert
It was a fine sunny cool-but-getting-warmer day but the winds were difficult to outguess. Light with puffs, gusts, and up to 90 degree wind shifts. Although some of the regulars couldn't make it, we had a excellent turnout with some southern Marylanders, including Ruth Lambert who was sailing a vintage toro (sail # 1732) that she had nicely restored (except for the mast which broke) plus the first Cherry Blossom/Ellie Ayres regatta for another member of the Ayres family, Jim's granddaughter, Kendall. As usual, Steve Swenson (Jim's son-in-law) set a good triangular course which was especially difficult this year with the wind shifts. And - best of all, Jim Ayres was there to handle registrations and answer questions about El toros. Joe Frost enlisted Rylee Young (yes, she was fairly young) as crew and they appeared to be having a great time out there in the scenic DC setting between the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument with the occasionally low flying helicopter overhead heading for the White House or Pentagon (which is what this regatta is all about - having fun). Ye olde (figuratively speaking) webmeister, Bill Schneider, decided to go for a swim just after the start of the second race. The water was definitely refreshing - Steve was there right away to help right the boat (with mud on the mast tip) and it was bailed out and I proceeded on my way shortly. Just as I got to the weather mark, Kendall Swenson decided to follow a wind shift a bit too closely and also went for a dip in the Tidal Basin. Perhaps she thought what I did looked like fun, but she soon found out the water was possibly excessively refreshing. I hung around until Steve got there to assist - at that point we both decided the cool breeze was a bit much to continue and went ashore to dry off. But it was fun! There was quite a variation in the results for each race with Jacie, Brian Taliaferro, and Jude Brown each winning a race, but Jacie proved to be the most consistant followed closely by her son, Kyle, and Brian Taliaferro, beating Geoff Schneider by a tie-breaker. Overall: 1. Jacie Swenson, 2. Kyle Swenson 3. Brian Taliaferro, 4. Geoff Schneider, 5. Dave Littleton, 6. Jude Brown, 7. Chisolm McAvoy, 8. Val Taliaferro, 9. John Heibig, 10. Tuckahoe Spring Regatta, June 10th
Tom & Carol Jones had planned another a fun regatta at their home on the Tuckahoe River. However, when we all arrived, the winds were gusting to 30mph - and from different directions! This combined with the chilly water resulted in a nosail vote. But we did stop at Richman's Dairy in Sharptown for a great lunch on the way home.

The Rogers Regatta on the Corsica River, June 24th
The 3rd Annual El Toro Invitational was held at Ship Point next to Emory Creek on the Corsica River. Chris Rogers did a fine job of hosting this years Corsica River El toro regatta. We were a bit concerned about the weather warning for severe thunderstorms, but the rain did not materialize. However, the wind was building throughout the morning and puffs and wind shifts make sailing fast a bit difficult when your attention was directed instead to survival. The wind proved too much for Brian Taliaferro's mast step which broke in the first race and he missed the first two races. Bill Schneider had the only capsize (the water was actually a very nice temperature) and finished last in the third race, but by then many of the others had decided to retreat for shore rather than going for an unplanned swim. Geoff Schneider won 3 of the 4 races, although he was closely pressed by Brian in a couple of them. A couple of the old-timers (or should I say mature-sailors), Bill & Val Taliaferro, placed 1st and 2nd in the first race, but the wind picked up after that. Hank Muma was doing a great job handling the puffs but caught a bad wind shift in the last race. Final results: 1. Geoff Schneider, 2. Bill Schneider, 3. Hank Muma, 4. Brian Taliaferro, 5. Val Taliaferro, 6. Dave Littleton, & 7. Carol Jones.
|
CBYRA Race Week one design regatta, July 5th & 6th.
The 2nd Annual CBYRA "Midsummers Night Dream" regatta for one designs was held at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis. However, we didn't have enough that would be able to preregister in time so we wouldn't have had enough for a class start. In any event, there was very little wind and it is unlikely we would have been able to complete a race in a toro.
|
Cambridge Annual Regatta/Atlantic Coast Championship, July 15th
The Atlantic Coast Championship was held at Cambridge Yacht Club as part of their annual regatta. The El toros actually had the largest fleet on the inside course since the Laser class was divided into full rig and radials. The winds were very light, combined with a strong downriver current in the morning. However, we ghosted around a long windward-leeward course. Brian Taliaferro led for a while but ran out of air for a bit and Hank Muma and Geoff Schneider passed him. We generally stayed close to our starting positions throughout the race, but somehow, Tom Jones, who was very late at the start, came steaming up from the rear and finished seconds out of 4th place. Hank Muma, again demonstrated his command of light air techniques and finished in first place. We drifted in for lunch as a heavy rain shower passed through. Despite nearby thunderstorms, the wind never picked up after lunch, so we packed the boats up for an early departure. Hank got especially strong applause at the awards ceremony when he revealed his age to the audience. We won't tell his exact age here, but on July 2nd, he celebrated his birthday - not his 48th, but another number which uses the same two digits, but in a different order. Happy belated Birthday, Hank! Results: 1. Hank Muma, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Brian Taliaferro, 4. Bill Schneider, 5. Tom Jones, 6. Dave Littleton, 7. Val Taliaferro, 8. Carol Jones, & 9. Chisolm McAvoy.

Plantation Regatta, August 12th

2006 Plantation Regatta - St Mary's City, MD.
The Plantation Regatta was held at the summer home of the Frys on St Indigoes Creek, St Mary's City, Maryland. The usual suspects were present plus Emma Hurd joined us for her first time ever sailing an El toro. The wind was doing it's best to keep us alert with puffs from different directions, alternating with casual moments when it took a rest break. Many of these appeared to be timed to happen at each start. However that just added to the challenge and fun. A pattern seemed to develop after awhile, but we'll keep that a secret in case it happens again next year. The Fry's put on a great barbecue for us after the racing. The final standings were: 1. Brian Taliaferro, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Bill Fry, 4. Hank Muma, 5. Bill Schneider, 6. David Littleton, 7. Chisholm McAvoy, 8. Val Taliaferro, & 9. Emma Hurd.
|
Presidents's/Leukemia Cup Regatta, September 9th
This year's President's cup regatta at the Washington Sailing Marina had a good turnout and was sailed on a day with very nice sunshine, but no wind. We started the one race, but no one was able to finish drifting around the course. A few of the classes with bigger boats managed to finish one race, but not us nor the Penguins. This is really strange for Washington DC, the city with all the hot air! You'd think all those updrafts would generate lots of wind. Final Results: Everyone was tied for first place (and for last place). |
Tuckahoe Fall Regatta, September 23rd
I guess after that last drifter in DC, we were too tuckered out for Tuckahoe ;-) Actually a bunch of us had unavoidable conflicts and there weren't enough people left to justify holding the race.

OVERALL: HIGH POINT for 2006 (calculated for those who sailed enough completed regattas, ie, all of them this year) Note: Hank Muma only got 3 regattas in but still had enough points to be 3rd overall if we didn't have to sail enough races: 1.
