AACLC is a volunteer 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1977 by six Laubach tutors living in Anne Arundel County. Its purpose is to tutor adults with little or no reading ability. AACLC is part of a worldwide organization, Laubach Literacy Action   (LLA).

LLA was founded in 1955 by Dr. Frank C. Laubach, the pioneer who developed a practical method of teaching non-reading adults to achieve at least fifth grade reading and writing skills. Our volunteers are trained and certified. We are autonomous, yet part of a worldwide, national, and state network.

The Laubach method assumes no literacy skills and takes the student to approximately a fifth grade reading level.  Other materials can be used to reach an eighth grade, pre-GED level.  The materials are published by New Readers Press.

A wide variety of supplementary materials applying newly acquired literacy skills to daily life is available through the office.  All branches of the public library have ABLE collections, materials for adult literacy students and their tutors.  From its web site titles can be found by entering the Library Catalog and ABLE in the search by keyword.

Students are encouraged to enter higher educational programs upon completion of our program. Referral information is provided to students and tutors.
