Thank you for your interest in AACLC. We are proud of our 24 years of providing free one-on-one tutoring using the Laubach method to Anne Arundel County adult residents. The Council office is conveniently located in Glen Burnie and serves all of Anne Arundel County.

Over 50,000 adults in our county need reading help.   Many cannot read medicine bottles, safety signs, or road signs. Others cannot fill out applications for jobs or health care. Thousands cannot reinforce reading skills to their children or read to a grandchild.

Tutors are trained in the Laubach "each one, teach one" phonics based method, emphasizing teaching an adult to learn to read as quickly and enjoyably as possible.  Meeting the student's individual needs is our primary goal.

The one-on-one tutoring takes place in libraries, churches, county detention centers, Second Genesis, the Council's Glen Burnie office and other sites mutually agreed upon by the student and tutor.

Tutor and student referrals are made by the public library system, local agencies, the Maryland Adult Literacy Center, and many other organizations who serve undereducated adults and volunteers  interested in literacy.

AACLC has been successful due to the participation of its outstanding volunteers and students. Adult literacy opportunities throughout the county are on-going.  Training workshops are conducted several times a year.

Reading by 9 Visits Admiral Oaks

Family literacy programs are on-site at Admiral Oaks Apartments, Annapolis, and will be in full swing after Labor Day.  OAKTRACK, a reading program for children, grades 1-8, provides dinner with its books. Nutrition is emphasized.  An afterschool Homework Club provides many services and is well attended.  Volunteers are needed for both programs. Training is provided.
